CNC Machined Parts
CNC machining is typically used for projects requiring one-offs to multiple hundreds of parts. From nylon to aluminum, Star Prototype offers a broad range of materials. Furthermore, we offer various finishing services which include sandblasting, painting, anodizing, polishing, printing and more.
We also offer the production of precision-machined components. Our precision engineering department offers milling, turning, CNC engineering, surface grinding, wire erosion and EDM spark erosion. All of your projects will be discussed carefully and checked before production starts. During and after production the parts will be 100% inspected. We can provide original certificates for all materials used in the project as well.
CNC milling allows us to quickly and accurately machine your parts from the stock material of your choice, in either plastic or metal. 2D and 3D shapes are easily created to a high standard of accuracy and surface finish. All CNC milling machine operations are programmed offline using Delcam Powermill software. Tool and job presetting help to insure fast turnaround and accuracy. The majority of CNC machines at Star Prototype are HAAS mills imported from the US. We also use HURCO machines from Taiwan as well as some local Chinese brands for projects of less demanding complexity.
Star-Prototype has increased its CNC turning capability with a US imported HAAS ST-20Y and a Doosan Lynx 235 CNC lathe for making turned parts. A complete range of plastics, aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, brass, copper can all be turned. Our CNC lathes enable high speed and high quality turning of both plastics and metals. The turning process allows for complex external geometries and internal bores to be generated. Our turning capacity is available for one-offs through to batch production of your components.
Star Prototype offers a variety of finishing services for machined parts, including surface grinding, knurling, honing, painting, printing etc. We understand that the finish of your prototype is just as important as the features, so we train our operators on a variety of finishing techniques.
Our general tolerances for CNC machining of metals is DIN-2768-1-fine and for plastics DIN-2768-1-medium. Tolerances are greatly affected by wall thicknesses, material choice, and geometry, so we will seek to advise as to achievable tolerances for each part. We pride ourselves on wishing to help our clients achieve their desired tolerances that are better than DIN-2768-1, but we work on a “best effort basis only” if the tolerances stated are tighter than our stated standards. The reason we refuse to be held accountable for very tighter tolerances is that we are a prototype factory and very tight tolerances present a huge risk due to the nature of our work.

As our customer you receive some of the highest quality parts in the industry due to our strict quality assurance process. In-process inspection assures on-time deliveries across the globe. With every project we undergo the following processes:
- Full technical review: free-of-charge Design For Manufacturing (DFM) review by our engineering team at every stage of enquiry.
- We keep our promise: Thorough contract review by shop floor managers upon receipt of PO
- Materials are verified: Pre-manufacturing material identification using OES & XRF inspection
- Processes without error: Thorough in-process inspection routines including First Article Inspection (FAI)
- Parts leave defect free: Post manufacturing inspection & reports
Star Prototype is committed to producing the highest quality CNC machined prototypes and parts. To meet this goal, we utilize a wide array of our own inspection equipment such as a NIKON CMM machine with a Renishaw touch-probe as well as a portable FARO Laser Scanning Arm, which can be positioned next to the machine to inspect 3D parts before they are removed from the machine. Additionally, all of our CNC operators attended a technical polytechnic and have undergone further training in-house under US Master Craftsman Jay Hood.
