The vacuum casting of polyurethane into silicone rubber moulds allows for an extended prototyping service.

Usually we make a master model by SL and then apply whatever surface finish is needed to the master model. We then pour liquid silicone rubber around the master model in casting box. Once cured we split the silicone rubber mould and we can use it to cast up to 20 PU parts per silicone mould.

Star-Prototype mostly uses European resins from Axson. Click here for a list of material properties. UP4280 is our most popular ABS simulant; PX522HT is best for clear parts; UP8400 is our rubber simulant. All can be colored to any Pantone number.

We can simulate a full range of thermoplastics and elastomers.

We can over-mould one material with another to simulate, for example, rubber over ABS, or opaque plastic over transparent plastic. It is also possible to over-mould threaded inserts. Painting and printing after casting is also common.

Vacuum cast prototypes can be colored and textured in the mould.

To produce high gloss clear parts we will normally use a CNC machined and polished Acrylic master model. Cast clear parts from Star-Prototype are of a very high quality.

Parts made by vacuum casting at Star-Prototype are mostly indiscernible from ‘real’ production injection mouldings.
